Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domain names can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are famous by. At the beginning, only 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to reserve john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already taken third-level domain names remained working.
